HEARD

It is late, and you looked at the door before you typed it

Am I overreacting, or is something really wrong?

I am not going to tell you which one it is. Not in the first minute, and not from one sentence.

Here is what I notice about the question. You did not ask whether it hurt. You asked whether you are allowed to be hurt.

Overreacting is a word that usually arrives in somebody else's voice first. Most women who type this at night can name whose.

So the accounting has already started. You are adding up whether what happened was big enough to justify how you feel.

You are not confused about what happened. You are confused about whether you are allowed to mind.

That is a different problem with a different shape, and more information will not solve it. You already have the information.

What you do not have is one place to say the whole thing without somebody deciding for you halfway through.

Sometimes what you find at the end of the telling is that it was small and you are exhausted. Sometimes it is not small at all. Both are worth knowing.
